These are limited edition prints from the Ponca City, Oklahoma
Landmark series painted between 1985 and 1993 by the late Oklahoma
artist Robert Hardee. They include: The Poncan Theater, Marland
mansion, Arcade Hotel, City Hall, Cultural Center, Library, High
School and the old Rock Island Train Depot.
The commissioned original paintings are characterized by bright
colors which Mr. Hardee obtained by using a method he said was
"reminiscent of an early Flemish technique". First an
under painting was made using acrylics in shades of brown-gray
and white. About two dozen layers of paint were applied to a sketch
to produce the necessary subleties in shading. Then three to four
layers of translucent oil paint were glazed on top of the under
painting.
Mr. Hardee earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School
of Art Institute of Chicago in 1984.
