SUE ARCHER NWS AWS
Sue became involved with watercolors in 1980 after a 15-year career
in Physical Education and coaching. When she moved to Florida
in 1979, she had the time and opportunity to take up watercolor
painting as a hobby. The hobby has now become a new, full time
career. The artist enjoys meeting the people buying her work,
so instead of showing through galleries, she sells her original
watercolors at outdoor juried shows in Florida, doing approximately
15 shows a year. She also teaches painting privately and spends
4 weeks a year teaching watercolor workshops.
Sue combines her enjoyment of the intricate process of drawing
with the wet on wet approach to watercolors. Most of her work
is representational with a strong emphasis on color and design
by simplifying a subject's light and shadow patterns. Using a
close-up view, she accentuates the dynamic interplay of positive
and negative space. Her present work explores the simplifying
of the shapes of fruit and vegetables and the use of textural
elements.
Sue's work has appeared in The Artist's Magazine (Oct 1988),
U.S.Art Sept. 1989), D&D (1989), Watercolor Magic (Dec. 1992),
American Artist's Watercolor '93 Fall, Splash 3 (Northlight Books
1994), Watercolor Magic ("Window into Worlds"-Fall 1995),
The Artist Magazine (Sept. '97) and Best of Watercolor III (Rockport
'99); and her award-winning paintings are exhibited in national,
regional, and state competitions and hang in numerous corporate
and private collections throughout the United States, Europe,
Australia and South America. In 1993, Sue had the honor of being
selected to do the Coconut Grove Art Festival Poster. Since Sue
began exhibiting her work in 1985, she has won over 100 state
and national awards.
